What Is Drag Racing And How Are The Winners Determined?

You may have heard about unofficial drag races taking place somewhere in your neighbourhood or town during the wee hours of the morning. This usually happens between friends making bets or simply just for fun. However, drag racing is actually a professional competition wherein motorcyclists or drivers race at high speeds to cross the finish line first. The race course has no turns or curves, and runs an approximate distance of 402 meters. Before the actual race begins, the competitors are allowed to do what's known as a 'burnout'. This is performed in order to heat up the tires of the bike or automobile, as well as to burn some rubber onto the course of the starting line area which, in turn, increases the tires' grip on the track. The cars and bikes used to race are specially designed for professional drag racing and run at extremely high speeds. Generally, two racers compete at a time, and a special electronic timer decides which bike or automobile has crossed the finish line first.
